COMPETITORS stood little chance against the pies and cakes entered by Ron Brums of Umina's Bremen Patisserie at last week's Castle Hill Bread and Pie Show.

Since Mr Brums opened the patisserie in 1996 and his wife persuaded him to enter the first pie competition, he has been awarded dozens of medals for his wares.

Last week, Mr Brums won first prize for the best sausage roll, best gourmet pie (his speciality is korma chicken curry pie), first prize for best decorated gateaux and the champion's prize in the cake section.

"I think the key to our success is that we have very good recipes and we've got a passion for cooking and eating in general," Mr Brums said.

"We have been involved in the biggest competitions in Australia.

"We entered The Great Aussie Meat Pie competition last September and out of our eleven entries we won eleven medals, as well as winning the Best in Competition award."
